I couldn't go but I'd like to hear a report on what Eric said if anyone has the
time to write one.

He was _excellent_. It was well worth the trip.
The topic was hacker culture and economics from an
anthropological view. His presentation was well
thought out and provoking.
It _is_ too bad that you couldn't go. I won't try
to replicate what he said here. However, it was recorded,
and might be put on the web. Try looking around:
http://www.cs.earlham.edu/esr.html
You should check out his writings at:

Furthermore, I am sure that his presentation will be
discussed at the next meeting.

ppp...
I have been there. My errors were usually less complex than I imagined.
There are three ways an ISP can authenticate your ppp connection.
PAP CHAT or CHAP. I bet you are using the wrong one.
PAP is I believe the most common.
My mistake was using chat because it looked more correct.
When the ISP wants PAP and I was sending CHAT I got the same thing you get.
A screen full of garbage and then disconnect.
And when I looked at my ppplog I would see that same sort of
connected-dev/ttys0
password: got it!
message.
I think PAP sends your username in the first negotiation and then prompts
for your Password. CHAT asks for both you username and your password, CHAP
has a more complex handshake protocol.
Surely REDHAT has something that automates this task.
Debian has pppconfig. By entering that command I get to choose between
PAP, Chat or Chat and then pick my modem as ttyXX and away I go.
Either pppconfig or wvdial walked me through the same sort of setup.
As for /etc/resolv.conf this was prompted for during the initial install
and if left blank pppconfig would prompt for it and edit it for me.
Some RedHat expert has the name of similar setup utilities.
Is is pppsetup or something like that?
I am a DEBIAN user but I know RH has a utility for this.

I use this card, I'm running Redhat 5.1. I needed to get an X-server
(XFCom-Matrox) from suse to get the card working properly, but I'm running
the version of XFree86 that came with 5.1.

I have a Matrox g200. Everywhere that I have seen information, it has been
said that the xfree-svga-3.3.3 server supports this card. However, I have
the server installed and it's not there.
Does anyone have any experience installing and using this card with
xwindows? I can't seem to get xwindows configured correctly for the life of
me.
Thanks
Tony

You have to update ALL of the packages that they say to update. Not just the
server. (this is so that your config script to setup you XF86Config work,
among other things, including stability)

You dont any more. Xfree 3.3.3.1 incorporated these exact drivers into the vga
server in this release.

Go to www.xfree86.org, read the 'relnotes' and do just as prescribed. It will
tell you to download several packages for an upgrade from 3.3.2 or to get them
all for an older version. Any more questions, ask on here again. The last
time I did this kind of upgrade was last year when 3.3.2 came out. I am going
to have to do it again here shortly though. I just reinstalled a new distro.

I followed the instructions given, and I have it working..the problem was
that I was getting the rpm's from rawhide and it was version 1.1, that
doesn't work so well ... but I replaced it with version 3.3.1 and it's ok
now. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Subject: Re: [COLUG] Cheap Tulip.o cards... NIS admins??
Seeing as how the DEC 'tulip' driver for the current Linux kernel is still the
most celebrated at the present time, I thought I would make a public service
announcement.
There are Netgear 310TX 10/100 NIC's on sale at the OSU bookstore for $30, retail
boxed. The cheapest I have found mail order + shipping still doesnt beat this
offer. These cards use the DEC chip that is supported by the tulip driver. For
more info on this chip, read the 'ETHERNET-HOWTO'.
Also, a question to the real savvy admins out there.
Is anyone out there a 'NIS' geek or thereabouts??? I am trying to incorporate many
useful automated things in my domain here at home, and am in need of some
assistance in the approach. All I basically want to do is setup all of my Unix
boxen to work like the CIS labs do. Common logins, X serving, XDM, and 'global'
mail. I can write a more verbose explanation of exactly the spec I need, but for
now I am still building my 'services' box. (Handling -- Master NIS, mail (IMAP,
etc), named, NT domain, NDS novell bindings, etc). Its a lovely 386 with 8 mb ram
and a 200MB hard drive. Thanks to Linux......
The biggest thing is that I need to get perms down so that a shared /home looks
and acts the same permissions wise as if it were local. Plsu the NIS login thing.
(I have read the howto's on each, only being not able to find *exactly* how this
is done)

Ok I'm off topic but most of you seem to have opinions so I am asking for
them:
Does anyone have real life situations where an app developed for Lotus
Notes was used in a mission critical environment. Notes is running on an
NT Domino server.
I have to argue why a UNIX app is better in a mission critical situation.
Thanks!
