It is just dhcp right now!

Just set up eth(?) to use dhcp and it works, nothing different from any
other dhcp server.

There is login software for RR available on their site but its not needed
just to get an address and go online!

To set up by hand just add this in rc.local

Redhat:
/sbin/insmod </PATH/module.o>
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up
/sbin/dhcpcd or /sbin/dhcpcd -D # Which ever you prefer

Sure, it's something like this

1) Call TW to set up an installation. Tell them you have windows, and you
want to do a self install.

2) Wait for the guy to show up. He doesn't care what OS you run, he will
plug a cable line into the modem, turn it on, then leave.

3) Configure your ethernet card to use DHCP. Activate your
interface. Surf.

Easy, eh?

It is a simple dhcp affair. Secure the system. Set
the interface to dhcp and reboot. You don't need to
do anything else for a single system.

Don't bother asking RR tech support for help with
anything but Windows/Mac.

I haven't signed up, and I assume it doesn't cost any money.
If it costs anything besides a meal, I won't go.

If some people want to go, I will go.

this is what the home page says:

| Catch the Linux® buzz for free.
| Attend SGI Linux University and learn more
| about harnessing this emerging operating
| system for your organization. Whether you’re a
| technical user or an IS/IT decision maker,
| invite your colleagues and come to SGI Linux
| University. Learn more about this emerging
| operating system, culture, and the importance
| of Linux at one of many FREE half day events

the word "free" is mentioned a couple times. do you think this is for
incredibly expert users/developers? i would be *extremely* interested
in going. i think it would be worth missing a day of class :)

I was planning on being there, but ran into sleep deprivation issues...
bad bad bad to drive at night.

anyway this is what my friend who did go, reported to me. I asked him if
I could send it to the list. that explains the inclusion of his email. he
wanted to be available if anyone wants to respond to him.

anyway I like his story. maybe it helps to know him...

"Free Speech, Not Free Beer" by Richard Stallman.

Permit me to render the experience.[1]

Aprox 200 people in a smallish classroom, standing room only.
90% students, 10% older dudes who look like they should be
on the cover of Wired. 3 girls total, and 2 of them were there
with their boyfriends. Me in the middle of the back, wearing a
tasteful grey and black. I got a couple odd looks from Stallman's
assistant. Perhaps it was my slight faux pas at the book table
before the show: "That's just our stock. There are copies up here."
He moves in defensively. Me: "Okay. Are you set up for credit
cards?" "No. We were supposed to be." With a complete lack of
grace, I wander suddenly away. A true Neal Stephenson moment.

Well, it was worth the trip for me. And you can't beat
the price. But I was surprised by how familiar I already
was with the subject matter. Which was Politics.
Stallman's speech was a polemic about the FSF. It was...
instructional...to hear geeks argue in Real Space during Q&A.
Stallman is definitely from the "shout the other person down, and
then realize you really should answer their question after all"
school of debate.

I had just happened to be browsing The Jargon File
last night, so I had a little more context going in
than I otherwise would have.

http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/Linux.html

Check it out if you haven't recently; the relevant
comments are probably new.

That's just a detail actually. The most interesting
parts of the discussion were specific audience questions
about the GPL. I'll give you specifics when I get around
to reviewing the tape.[2]

I'm glad and sorry I passed up the chance to say,
"Mr Stallman, I've been taping all of this. Would you like
me to surrender the tapes to you?" The man is a little
scary, as only someone with no natural communication skills
who has made up the difference with heuristics can be.

The kid beside me nearly wet his pants when I decided,
yes, I am in fact going to pull this recorder out of my pocket
and change the sides on the tape. And I had been such a nice man
up until then. Moving my coat and all. Giving him a pen to sign
his class sheet. Anyway,

Nearly two and a half hours. You wouldn't have gotten any
sleep at all. Bottom line: a recruitment speech for his
cause, and kind of strident. He really put the fear of god
into some of those kids.[3] I don't recall, however, disagreeing
with much he said. No techspeak that was over my head.
And if I was contextualized, you certainly would have been.
It's probably okay you gave him a miss. But if he comes to
OSU, check him out.

I'll never mistake him for any other kerioke singer, that's
for sure.[4]

[1] Hello, public forum. I am newbie. I would paraphrase RMS
as saying that constructive criticism is always welcome,
but unconstructive criticism is little better that an
unfriendly personal attack. In that spirit, anyone who
cares to may ROT13 and reverse this: gra.rfhs@yyvuaubw

[2] Specifics (non-inclusive) from the Q&A:

An interesting issue here, the subtlety of which I
hopefully will not mangle: RMS is not willing to expand
the GPL in such a way that copyleft would cover other
'free' but proprietary software, such as Mozilla.
Apparently, for people developing GPL free software,
there can crop up annoying compatibility issues, which
could be solved by relaxing the rules of GPL. However,
RMS does not trust himself, or anyone else, to write such
a broad legal document "without any bugs in it". Any flaw
in such an explanded GPL might someday be used to undermine
the work of the FSF. "I'm sorry," he said. "I won't risk it."

Another person asked, "If I want to release a piece of
software under the General Public License, should I just
go ahead and sign the copyright over to the FSF?"
RMS answered that he couldn't make that decision, but he
also offered the observation that the FSF has the financial
and legal muscle to protect its own copyrights.

[3] RMS mentioned http://www.badsoftware.com/
which contains information on an unpleasant piece of
proposed legislation, UCITA. Pass it on.

[4] Totally and completely and worthlessly obscure.
But the tears on her cheeks are from laughter.

A bit of a Y2K problem there.... the date line is supposed to have a
4-digit year.

Good report though.

I think I am interested, I have family and friends in Cleveland so I may
spend extra time there and may therefore have to skip on carpooling.

SGI called me about this or something like it. They left a message on my
machine. I will check it out.

I think SGI will crawl out of the hole they dug by embracing NT and be reborn.
They just announced an irix clustering solution, they are responsible for
open gl, I think they will do some good things for linux.
