The Mission:
To create a core Operating System based entirely on Open Source software that has the functionality, portability, stability, features, usability and support to be adopted throughout the community.
The Project:
A true community based project that allows community members to become package maintainers responsible for the implementation of a package or group of packages into the distribution.
The Necessity:
Open Source projects are abundant and diverse (chaotic). This is a project designed to bring them together into a usable system allowing the community itself to make the design decisions necessary for a successful Operating System.
The Name:
au courant: adj : being up to particular standard or level especially in being up to date in knowledge; kept abreast of the latest developments.
cAos versioning represents the four C's: Crazy, Current, Cautious, and Closed. Each of these flavors of versions would be mutually exclusive. Each successive version represents more and more stability, at the price of less and less current features.
Crazy -- This flavor represents the latest and greatest version of every RPM. There is no assurance they will even boot. It is of use to the brave souls who maintain code.
Current -- This flavor represents the latest and greatest version of all RPM that play well together. Some person actually has done some testing. This is the flavor suitable for the average user's workstation.
Cautious -- This flavor represents the oldest version that has no security flaws. It is of use to those who maintain servers and want to introduce as little change as possible so as to minimize sources of error.
Closed -- This flavor represents the initial version of a release. It is what it is. The older it is, the more likley it is that it is riddled with security holes. It is of use as an archival version of the release.
