There are basically no differences by OS (indeed even for NT). When bugs are discovered they get fixed. Vendors (Red Hat etc) release updates. People who apply updates don't get hit by that hack, people who do may get hit. You should start with some general security stuff anyway (whatever platform). Turn off any external network services you dont use. Set /etc/hosts.allow/deny files up to stop stuff you dont use.
