Subject: Re: [COLUG] Linux + Win2k boot
Thanks for all the help. This deserves to be a FAQ, I've found out, and
the problems seem to stem from the fact that Windows really really
really wants to be the primary master hard drive. There are two ways of
dealing with this.
1. The "Resistance is Futile" option. Switch the disks so that Win2k is
the primary hard drive (/dev/hda) and then work out a way to load linux:
either make it an element in the Win2k bootloader or have a tiny Linux
partition on /dev/hda to load (and be prepared for a lot of fooling
around with the bootsector).
2. The "Fool it!" option. Keep the disks where they are and use LILO to
fool Windows. You can do it by adding this stanza:
other=/dev/hdb1
label=Win2k
table=/dev/hdb
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80
The map-drive option to LILO maps BIOS calls to the relevant device
code; the example above effectively interchanges the drive order from
the BIOS's point of view -- so /dev/hdb becomes C: and /dev/hda D: (so
to speak). This is the option I adopted, once I found out about it. It
works flawlessly. There is a *lot* of outdated information and just
plain misinformation about Linux+Win2k out there, so I hope this might
help someone else.
