Yeah, that sort of scheme is fairly common.
QuickTime is also a container format that can contain either open or
proprietary codecs. QuickTime gets a bad rap due to the most common
codecs being proprietary, but the format itself is open.
The TIFF image format (er, redundant?) is another container format.
