Yes. I've done this for friends with Knoppix.

The "modem" used was whatever Mother Bell supplied.
In his case, ethernet was used. PPPoE was used. Yuch!
Note that you might have some problems related to changing
the MAC address of whatever you plug into the "modem".
Use a _dedicated_ box for the firewall, whether that box
is an appliance firewall, or a dedicated PC running something
like Coyote Linux or LEAF/Bering.
