At first I also thought it might be a permissions problem, but it happened 
both as root and as user computation.

I found a brute force solution, I reinstalled XFree86 and am not working again.

However, I think that I'm having another permissions problem.  I have 
installed the Tinker molecular mechanics software package as user 
computation.   The java base gui works, but when I attempt to run one of 
the executables in a console I get a can't load library problem:

computation at abnormal:~/tinker/bin>  protein
protein: error while loading shared libraries: libjvm.so: cannot open 
shared object file: No such file or directory
computation at abnormal:~/tinker/bin>

The strange thing is that the library being complained about is in the 
tinker file tree:

/home/computation/tinker/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so
/home/computation/tinker/jre/lib/i386/server/libjvm.so

in two different places and has the permissions computation.users, the 
permissions for the entire tinker file structure.

Any insights, and solutions, to this problem will be very appreciated.
