Might your box have been cracked?
A LOOOONG time ago (late 90's) I had a similar problem; I noticed that all
of the files in my /etc directory could no longer be deleted, mv'd
(renamed), or edited (saved). Even if I put the HD on another PC and
mounted it under /mnt, I couldn't modify those files! Dave Reed pointed
me to a hidden file attribute under ext2 that, when set, would prevent
even root from modifying files. I forget the exact method of disabling
this (perhaps it needs a partition reformat), and I'm not sure if it
affects ext3 as well. Maybe you should backup all your data and reformat?
(ducks and runs - hate to prescribe a Windows solution to a Linux user...
:) )
