I booted from xubuntu 6.06 (live cd) and the had same results (cannot
mount: drive busy; cannot umount: not mounted)

While the system is up and running,

did this:
#umount -f /dev/hdf1
umount2: Invalid argument
umount: /dev/hdf1: not mounted

did this:
# fsck /dev/hdf1
fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
fsck.ext3: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/hdf1
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

I don't have anywhere to do a dd to, even if I wanted to, or another
computer to take this drive out and use somewhere else.
