[COLUG] Odd boot-time problem.

I am playing with a Dell Optiplex 320 PC, which I'm trying to re-image into 
a Gentoo linux box.  I'm trying to use Gentoo's automatic hardware 
discovery, which worked on the LiveCD I used to install the OS from.

Grub appears to be installed (I get the grub menu) but it fails when I 
select any OS image, including memtest86 which I copied from the LiveCD. 
The system shows the kernel line, gives addresses in brackets, and stops 
before listing the initrd or doing anythign else.

I've noticed that there are sometimes odd characters appearing in random 
locations on the screen when this occurs.

This one's pretty abnormal from my experience of installing and running 
Linux.  Any thoughts as to what could cause this?
