I was only offering a *suggestion*.

My real Gentoo advice would be that unless you are building your own distro
based off Gentoo, then build a base kernel with the hardware you know you
have and skip building it for everything. If you want everything, install
Ubuntu.

I'd suggest a visit to the gentoo forums.  A majority of the time I can find
an answer to the question I need answered.
