I haven't installed Linux on a laptop recently, but I have had good success 
running it on HP laptops.  If you can find an HP unit with the video 
resolution you want,  I think you should be able to get Linux installed.  The 
only real issue I've run into is the wireless network card (HP tends to use 
Broadcom).  So I just download the ndis driver, and it works.

I don't know how well hibernate would work, though, since I've never tried to 
to implement it.
