And once you've gotten it connected, you can avoid the use of GTKpod,
iTunes, and other "heavy" solutions by using shuffle-db:

I've been using this on my old model Shuffle with tremendous success.
It's _much_ easier, and more intuitive, than the GUI tools I've tried to
date.

The shuffle-db website says that users report success using it with new
(2006) model Shuffles.
