I agree with the various comments about wireless cards being a problem. 
Lots of downloads later, the Thinkpad wireless is still likely to drop 
the signal so I just plugged the darn thing into the router.I have been 
able to get hibernate (apm -s) working, by switching into the root tty1 
which I always keep running-- seems a small price.

Other than that, I have had no particular problem with Toshiba and 
IBM/Lenovo laptops with simple Debian/Sarge installs, though I have not 
installed one for a year or so.

Presumably if even a newbie like me can get Debian to run, Toshiba and 
Thinkpads must be pretty easy (always excepting the darn Intel wireless 
chips.)
