I suppose it depends on what you want.  

On my system at home, I use an rsync backup for my personal data like
documents, pictures, and mp3s.  This data is largely static.  The
advantage is that I have a fallback if I (or a script acting on my
behalf) get overzealous when removing files.  I do a daily "rsync", and
a weekly "rsync --delete".  I have some (delayed) disk failure
protection, and some brain failure protection.

The RAID-1 solution handles disk failures very well.  But it trusts me
more than I trust myself.  :-)
