[COLUG] compiling vs. package management

I used to compile various apps I needed, but as the number of systems I
maintained grew I turned to the package management system of choice for
whichever distro I was using.

These days it is yum with CentOS or Fedora.  I find it much more
convenient and maintainable to install packages via yum or rpm.
