Try ssh'ing from an _old_ version of Red Hat. 

That's a bad hack. I don't know what the proper solution is. 

I've noticed that I no trouble ssh'ing from an old RH box 
into other (newer OS) boxes and running X programs, 
but ssh'ing from newer RH'ish (Centos) versions to run X apps 
doesn't work well. I don't know why.
