I recommend "the John Companies".
They recently added rsync.net to their suite of service products.
That would provide file storage and MAY include HTTP. I use their
FreeBSD jail service. They also offer Linux, but it costs more.
Looking at their web site http://www.johncompanies.com/ they list
$15/mo for FreeBSD jail VPS just mail and backup DNS
$29/mo for FreeBSD jail VPS full service (3 rels of FreeBSD)
$47/mo for Linux VPS (any of SIX distros, including CentOS)
They also support rental servers and hosted servers.
Xen can operate in "paravirtualization" mode. Dunno if that is what
SliceHost offers. The FreeBSD jail is similarly a "virtualized OS"
rather than a full-out virtual machine. More recent Xen can (if I
understand correctly) run in full-out virtual machine mode. A friend
who is a former co-worker introduced me to Virtuozzo a couple years ago.
He loved it! That was the first time I had seen a VPS, though I
have used virtual machines for like 25+ years.
I would be surprised if JC has a waiting list.
In any case, I believe you would hear back from them quickly
if there were any issues or delays.
I have been VERY pleased. When you talk to support, you talk to
a real person. [shock!] This was invaluable when I moved recently
because my home based static addrs simply no longer existed.
But now I need to go the other direction and get static IP addrs
on DSL here at home. Anyone doing 3-bit mask DSL at home?
I run Linux mostly, but was pleased to try FreeBSD for the VPS.
Yeah ... it's different. But I hate to be painted into any one corner
even the Linux corner. The VPS hosts my primary DNS and web presence
and my main inbound and outbound email service. 'rsync' (the command,
not the service mentioned above) makes management SO easy. Vewy nice.
I forget if I had to build 'rsync'. Probably. I built Apache by choice.
