The other option you have here, would be to get an adapter so you can 
mount the laptop drive in a desktop machine.  These can be invaluable 
when you want to mount the drive on a desktop system.  I'm assuming you 
have a 2.5 in drive.  Look for a 2.5 mobile drive to desktop IDE adapter.

You can then mount it in your system, copy the data to a safe place and 
mess around with the MBR.
