[COLUG] Feisty warning sound problem request

I have a rather new Acer Aspire 5100-3357 and have installed Feisty.
Anything less than Feisty was not installing properly, so I went with
the Kubuntu beta which mostly worked on installation. I have been using
it for a couple months, even with a Sierra Aircard using Cingular.

The sound worked when I first installed it and after updates, does not
work anymore. In trying to get it to work, I found directions which
called for uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA and on some derivatives of
Ubuntu, had a warning about the uninstall procedure removing other files.

Well, it removed them under Kubuntu, too, which included my desktop.

Being out of town, it was difficult to get it working due to the no
availability of a free connection to the internet for the installation
procedure to work. All the dependent files are not on the Feisty install
disk, so it looks to repositories to get them, which you cannot get
without an open network connection, which I cannot get without a GUI
working. (desktop removed) (used apt-get install kdm kubuntu-desktop
from a command line which still worked)

My solution was contacting a local computer club and using a member's
home network to get access, which then worked. I am using it now.

There seems to be a lot of people having the same problem of sound not
working (also modem since it uses ALSA). I was wondering if some one on
the list has seen a solution which works. I already tried getting it
new, since that's the procedure which wiped out my desktop.

lspci -v finds: Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)

aplay: device_list:222: no soundcards found...

Side note, when booting there is an error message which states that a
pci bus error found. I don't have details on the error, and don't see it
listed in dmesg.

Any ideas are appreciated.
