[COLUG] Pesky Ubuntu problem

I have a stripped down version of Ubuntu running as a virtual machine
in Q or QEMU on my macosx.

I went to install apache from source and it faile to find gcc. So I
grabbed gcc with apt-get install gcc. Well it is still unhappy, I had
to install make using apt also.

Is there a "meta" package that has all these development tools ?

Is there a quick way to select those.

Aptitude has a learning curve, adept fails to su to root and xhosts +
fails to allow adept to run.

So from apt is there a devel package that gives me make ad al the
other compile tools ?

I am getting a little bit rusty with debian stuff, so a quick bump in
the right direction might be all that is needed.
