The links I gave you are for either vmware or qemu, it'll work in both,
although I only tested it on Linux and Windows I assume it'll also work
on a Mac.

For server type stuff Debian and Ubuntu are almost identical however
Debian installs less things by default, Ubuntu are off on this trip
about giving you the full experience blah blah blah, when most of the
time I just want a stable, small foot print that I can build myself
without having stupid stuff installed that shouldn't be on a server.

For what I was doing I chose to do flat files, SQLite didn't offer much
except a little more bloat.
