Thanks, this looks like something I can try.

Also, thanks to Dave/Pat for the info about Dosemu. I'll look into it, 
especially if you already have something working using serial ports. I 
found the same as you did about DosBox that they are primarily gamers, 
and not for work.

In the mean time, I have located Cutecom which is a first step toward 
what I would like (it's a nice way to monitor com ports for industrial 
equipment). I have downloaded the source and have modified the com 
selector box to allow selection of /dev/ttyUSBx as a choice (it now 
allows /dev/ttyS0-ttyS3). I have not compiled it to see if it really 
works. Also, I noticed the last update was in 2006, so it does not 
appear to be very active.
