These USB serial adaptors vary in quality. Most don't support full hardware
handshaking. For many apps, that doesn't matter but it is something to be
aware of. You'll also want to use something like minicom just to make sure
the port is working. Having an old serial port modem laying around is as
good a test jig as any. At the very least you should be able to do
the "AT", "OK" dance.
For that matter, I'm not so sure about these USB ports and full duplex. Is
half-duplex a possibility.
