Minicom is great as an equivalent to those old DOS terminal programs like
ProComm. But since BBSs are gone, I get frustrated when I try to use it
for serial port work now. Mostly because it tries to initialize a modem
when it first starts, before you've had a chance to configure it, and I
don't always want to use the same serial port (or even a modem). Plus
its line-drawing characters don't always work.
When I just want something simple to deal with arbitrary serial ports I
use "cu", which was originally part of the UUCP suite but now often
available separately.
If you want something between the simplicity of cu and the complexity of
minicom, the Kermit terminal program is also still around, as both
C-Kermit and G-Kermit depending on your choice of license and features.
