I use minicom, and have the same frustrations with it. I haven't used
a real modem in many, many years. I use it as a dumb terminal
emulator for talking to industrial devices (routers, high voltage
controllers...)

I have far fewer frustrations using Kermit, but it's not always on
systems I'm working on; minicom typically is.
