I think you may find the former difficult. I have a client who requires
a hardware serial port on his laptops to interface to handheld devices
for which he only has DOS drivers. He has had to buy used laptops as he
can't find any new ones with hardware serial ports.

The handheld devices have been replace with USB-based ones, but he has a
significant investment in the old ones and they still do what he needs.
