Support for the early FTDI chips have been in the kernel since 2.6.11 and 
support for later chips added as they were released.  The most recent ones 
were added in 2.6.20, and I've had no problem with using several converters 
based on these chips.  They provide full hardware handshaking support.  The 
two recently purchased ones (using the FT323R chip) have a pair of blue LEDs 
to indicate RX/TX activity.
