Here's another benefit: data security.

If you have to re-install, or like to swap distros a lot, or have multiple 
OS's in your bootloader, having a separate /home partition should make you 
feel more comfortable as you can share that partition among OS's or be 
relatively sure that it's not clobbered by an installer that is writing 
stuff to /usr, /var, /etc, etc...
