[COLUG] PowerPath issues

My platform is a Dell PowerEdge 2850, with QLogic HBAs. RH 3, with a newish 2.4.x smp kernel. The upstream storage isn't relevant for solving my problem, which is that during boot, PowerPath tries to start, but fails, and says to please start PowerPath manually. 

When the system comes up, I login and as root do a 'service PowerPath start' it works fine.

This is happening only on a couple boxes, and is not happening on others. Be darned if I can spot what's different between the ones that start ok and the ones that require intervention.

FWIW, we added a 'S99' script to run last which simply contains the start command, and that works.

Anyone else run into this and/or have a solution?
