If you are doing the kind of presentation where you are 
showing a few lines of big text, ala the typical 
"Powerpoint" presentation, then 800*600 is sufficient. 

If you want one shell of 24 * 80 lines of text, 
then 800*600 is sufficient. 

If you want a typical desktop, more is better. 
I wouldn't hesitate at jumping on more resolution.
