BTW I'm running CentOS 4.4 on all of my boxen, kernel 2.6.9.  I wish I 
would have discovered this three years ago, as I believe this problem 
started when I had Whitebox EL 3, and remained with an upgrade to CentOS 
4.  Mandrake 10 never had this problem...
