Updates can take a _long_ time to download.
CD images take even longer.
Neither are nice over phone lines.
Email _is_ feasible over phone lines.

_A_few_ phone service/cable TV providers will offer cheap
but not super fast internet service as part of a bundle of
phone/cableTV/internet service.

Other than that, drag your computer with a wireless card over to
Stauf's or Cup 'o Joe and fill up your bucket of bits for the
price of a cup of coffee. Or fill up your bucket of bits at a
friend's house for the price of a pizza.

UA Library has free wireless internet also.

Or find an ISP that allows sharing,
and use wireless to share a connection with a neighbor.
