Of course.

There isn't much to learn. It's hard to mess up a hard drive that 
you don't have. Flash can be messed up if it can be written 
to. Bootable CDs in a drive that can not burn, is very 
difficult to mess up. Likewise for write protected 
floppy disks.

Start with Knoppix. Not only is it a live CD, 
at least one version had a PXE boot server and client. 
There's been NX stuff in some newer versions. 
I don't know what the present state is. 

Network PXE boot can be also used to download and boot an 
unperturbed image from a server. 

One can also boot virtual machines from an 
image that can not be modified.
