I like GUIs, so here's what I did to get mine working in about 5 minutes 
with our encrypted network.

First, I used NDISGTK to install the drivers with ndiswrapper. It takes 
all the file editing out. All you need is your windows driver for the 
network card and it installs it for you. Just a couple clicks away.

Secondly, I use Knetworkmanager to connect to the encrypted wireless 
network. Just fill in the blanks. It can do phrases or hex. I used hex.

Third, for non encrypted networks, I use wireless assistant which also 
is in the adept package manager. It will scan for networks. Just pick 
one out of the list, click a couple times and you're on. I am using it 
right now from Iowa. Been using it for a week at a different hotel each 
night. (none are encrypted)

My method results in no file editing, so I don't have to worry about 
that comma or # sign is missing. I started doing it the file editing way 
then I looked around a bit and saved myself a lot of headaches.
