If using Konqueror, I don't know if there is a way to replicate the behaivor 
you mention but then if I were using Konqueror, I'd use View -> Split View
-> Split View Left Right (ctrl-shift-l) and just leave a pane open on the left 
for any point I want to return to.  These views can be created and destroyed 
at will very quickly and IMHO work better for the type of task you describe.
