Try hitting control-L to redraw the screen.

Try running screen with the -U option.

Check the screen man page for "encoding" (or "defencoding") to set that by 
default.

It may also be useful to check the output of the "locale" command, and 
possibly change some environment variables if you don't want UTF-8.
