[COLUG] E-mail on both PC desktop and remote (palm pilot, etc.) devices

Hello all!

How does one set up a system (sendmail) that would allow a user to have 
their e-mail both on their desktop PC and a remote device, i.e. 
PalmPilot, TreoPhone, etc.???

I have Outlook and/or Thunderbird saving mail on server and set to 
delete on server when deleted on client.  Would this allow another 
device to download the e-mail that still exists on the server?  (I guess 
I am asking if the POP server marks the e-mail in some way that 
indicates it's been downloaded, or does the client check for duplicate 
downloads?).
