When you indicate (perhaps implicitly) that you have read a letter, 
do you want to have to repeat that indication for 
each device that you read email on? 

If not, then use something like IMAP (perhaps with a web based 
mail reader such as SquirrelMail on top of IMAP) to coordinate deletion.
