[COLUG] Eject USB Jump Drive

I'm running Ubuntu Dapper with Gnome. I have 'discovered' the
Configuration Editor that lets me control the icons on my desktop. I
turned of the option to show volumes on my desktop (I'm in a 'clean
desktop' phase). This is fine because I can access the volumes through
the Places menu.
However, with volumes displayed, when I insert my USB jump (thumb/pen)
drive, an icon shows up on the deskop. The right-click context menu
allows me to eject the device, before unplugging it. Is there a
graphical way to eject the jump drive without having the volume
displayed on the desktop? I assume I could use the umount command, but
I'm looking for a mouse click to do this.
Thanks,
Mark
