For power there's mutt, but of course that doesn't exactly fit the 
question.  Similar with Emacs-based Gnus or Rmail.

I think Kmail (my current choice) is smaller than Tbird, but I'm not sure 
how much weight the KDE libs add if you're not already running KDE.
