Are you sure that your limiting factor is memory?

My "secondary desktop" (what I use from work via FreeNX) is an ancient 
Sager laptop - 256M ram, 450MHz K6.  While stuff takes a reeeeealy long 
time to start up, even while browsing flash-heavy sites with firefox or 
using OOo, I don't notice more than a meg or two in swap, sometimes 
there's nothing in swap.  I'm using CentOS 4.4 in Gnome mode over FreeNX 
when I get these numbers.

So, your sluggishness may be due to a slow processor or disk...
