I generally agree, although mutt's tagging feature is actually more 
efficient.  I switched away from mutt when I had to work with multiple 
IMAP servers/accounts, and also (at the time) it had trouble with large 
IMAP folders.  (It now caches those.)

Yeah, Kmail does have trouble with megahuge IMAP mailboxes.  I regularly 
access mailboxes on the order of a few thousand messages, and it 
occasionally has a little trouble.  Mostly when it gets closer to 10000 
messages.

My understanding is that GNOME uses more memory and is slower than KDE.
And of course KDE exposes more settings to the user.
