I would check out the Keyspan Highspeed serial adapter. http:// 
www.keyspan.com/products/usb/usa19hs/homepage.spml

Claims Mac/Win/Linux support.  Note that the vanilla kernels include  
this driver.

I haven't used it in a long time but I remember it working well.
