I did an impromptu installation (attempt) with MythDora, which is a
Fedora installation customized to support MythTV.
It went pretty well until the cd/media threw an error and the install
died somewhere on the second CD. (Having repeated the process at home
with a wire based install and gotten the same error I can now say it is
not a media issue). At this point we descended into some
hacking with grub (who was the gentleman in the black tee shirt with the
rather extensive grub shell knowledge?).
We eventually boot strapped our way into a semi working system, with no
grub.conf in sight. We tried pulling in a working grub via yum update
kernel (didn't work), then had the bright idea of using the
documentation in /usr/share/doc/grub where we found a well commented
example. This got us to a system that was bootable in the traditional
way, but we were unable to login. After using rescue mode to reset the
passwords, (but still failing to login) we realized that the selinux
contexts for login and bash had not been correctly configured. By
disabling selinux, we were able to get fully logged into the system at
which point we were out of time.
If I get this machine fully configured, I will bring it back next month
to do a quick demo of MythTV itself.
I also discussed various observations from my attendance at the Red Hat
Summit in San Diego. http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/ for some of
the keynotes, etc.
Thank you to Innova for their hosting of the meeting. Very nice
facility and not that hard to get to at all.
