I'm guessing you are trying to cope with a lot of hits per second to
dynamic images that update every x seconds/minutes, wouldn't you be
better off handling the dynamic update either via a cron job directly on
the server or via a http call.

Not to mention there are less resource hogging bits of software out
there that can also do cache/proxy functionality, eg lighttpd.
