This thread is all more interesting than I would have thought.
I took a new job something like 20 months ago ... supporting Linux.
Was doing Linux in my prior job too, but this new place is
much bigger and has much more "process", more formalities.
(Long story on THAT I will spare the group.) I am learning a lot.
Linux "training" ala MCSE is available now. I have not
priced it, but it's gotta be in the same ballpark as MS "training".
These certifications become important to the bigger companies.
Even if you've been doing Linux since 0.99 and written apps
and drivers for more than a decade, the "cert" means more
to some business types than your real skill.
The point is, whether you respect the typical MS route or not,
it is one of the possibilities that can be taken with Linux.
You can get a degree from "Linux High".
There is also the question of outside support:
Small, medium, or large businesses can contract for MS support.
They can now similarly contract for Linux support. This is known
where I work now (we pay for it) and where I worked before
(did not buy it, but did not need it; long story skipped).
But the rural businesses and institutions may not know yet.
