SER (Sip Express Router) is an alternate VoIP call switch platform,
there is voice mail and a few other bits and pieces you can put together
to build a system comparable to asterisk but infinitely more scalable.
The down side is, it isn't the easiest thing in the world to setup, but
once it is setup the scalability can't be matched, and the way things
are with Asterisk development, will never be matched by Asterisk.
OpenSER was a release of SER by the developers with GPL license, and
former developers for IPtel, had different ideas then the direction
iptel wanted to take SER.
There are other projects, that are as good or better then Asterisk, but
just didn't have the press Digium seems to have gotten:
* Callweaver - Asterisk fork.
* YATE - Yet Another Telephony Engine, the main dev is a girl in
romanina who's fav past time is poking fun at Asterisk devs (or was)
* Ser/OpenSER
* FreeSwitch - Another group of disgruntled Asterisk coders, but this
has been coded from scratch using javascript as the main configuration
method
* sipX - not really sure as they don't really support enum and I never
looked much beyond that
All these and more are linked to on http://www.voip-info.org
If you want something almost identical to Asterisk, minus the bugs,
Callweaver is probably the best bet, and will get better once they
replace the SIP stack.
