[COLUG] Problem with new Monitor

I am running OpenSUSE 10.2 on a 64 bit AMD platform and have just 
installed a new 22" flat monitor.  I am having a bit of a bother with 
the new monitor.  It works fine during the boot until the system gets 
to opening KDE.  At that point the screen stays blank and I get a 
'Out of Range' message.  The problem can be solved by changing the 
screen properties, but how can I get the system to continue booting 
to a command line rather that a gui?
